      Разработана концептуальная модель осадки-сток формирования подземного стока карстового массива. Для рядов суточного разрешения наблюдений за расходом реки Черная на гидропосте в с. Родниковское и данных метеостанции Ай-Петри модель откалибрована на примере представительного 34 летнего ряда наблюдений. Модель может быть использована для прогноза изменения карстового стока с использованием даунскейлинга глобальных климатических моделей.

      The variability of continuous hourly water temperature data and electrical conductivity measured at the Jadro karst spring was analysed for the period from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2021. In this paper, the mean daily air temperature and daily precipitation data measured at the meteorological station Sinj, and the mean daily flow of the Jadro Spring, in the period 1995–2021 were also used. The analyses were performed on various time scales of year, month, and day. The aquifer that feds Jadro Spring has a very complex hydrogeological structure that is insufficiently explored. Jadro Spring has a limited capacity of maximum discharge. Its catchment area is not defined precisely. The relationship between water temperature and electrical conductivity is directly proportional while the relationship between water temperature and spring discharge is inversely proportional. As the flow of the spring increases, water temperature and electrical conductivity decrease. The narrow range of water temperatures and electrical conductivity indicates that the karst aquifer from which the spring is fed is not directly influenced by air temperatures and that flow does not occur through large karst conduits with a free water surface. The underground water level is located deep below the surface of the terrain, more than 100 m.

      The relative importance of karst conduits and fractures in driving groundwater flow affects the discharge of springs and the long-term availability of water resources. Applying statistics to the hydrographs of the discharge and studying the recessions provide information on the degree of reliability and variability of the springs and, therefore, the flow regime within the saturated part of the carbonate aquifers. This approach was applied to six springs at the Gran Sasso aquifer in Central Italy. These springs were divided into three structural geological groups that determined the position of the permeability thresholds. The type of tectonic structures and the pattern of the permeability thresholds allow a correlation with the computed statistics. The studied springs were associated with the presence of thrusts, overturned drag folds, and a normal fault. The computed statistics describe a general scenario of reliability and steadiness for the springs. The Flow Duration Curves for the springs show limited groundwater flow through the conduits through a comparison with analogues in Slovakia. Joints and bedding plane fractures dominate the groundwater flow, fitting both the relative steadiness of the discharges and the pattern of the Flow Duration Curves. The recessions are also characterized by more gentle slopes with respect to nearby areas fitting a conceptual model of dominant fracture flow. This mathematical scenario depicts groundwater resources, which have limited exposure to episodes of summer droughts. The proposed approach is a holistic combination of structural geology and hydrologic elements and can be successfully exported to other tectonized carbonate areas for the sustainable management of groundwater resources worldwide.

      81Kr and 36Cl can both be used to date groundwater beyond the dating range of 14C. 81Kr usually provides reliable groundwater ages because it has uniform initial distribution and negligible subsurface generation, while 36Cl is commonly influenced by subsurface sources or “dead” chloride dissolution. Therefore, the combined use of 81Kr and 36Cl could provide clues on the evolution history of groundwater. In the present study, we performed 36Cl and 81Kr dating of geothermal water in Weihe Basin of China and interpreted the possible cause of disagreement. Two distinct water masses were identified with distinctive isotopic signals: groundwater with significant δ18O shifts (up to −2.0‰), dissolved dead Cl and ages 1.0 Ma (Cluster B). The results confirm the eastward flow path of Cluster B to the Ancient Sanmen Lake with an increasing trend of Cl concentration and age. Modern recharge from the mountains flows to the basin center with intense interaction between water and carbonate under respective reservoir temperatures (100 ∼ 130 °C). These waters flow through the saline stratum emerging from the spillover of the Ancient Sanmen Lake, resulting in higher dead Cl dissolution. A significant linear relationship is observed with the older end-member of ∼1.3Ma under the topographically-driven faster circulation effect. 81Kr ages seem to support the hypothesis that the birth of the modern Yellow River was at about 1.0–1.3 Ma. We inferred the drainage reorganization from the Ancient Sanmen Lake to the modern Yellow River since the Mid-Pleistocene Transition induced the change in groundwater dynamics as well as its chemical evolution. The excavation of the Ancient Sanmen Lake and the accentuated incision of the Weihe River induced groundwater gradient, and therefore the recharge from precipitation from both slopes of the Qinling Mountains in the south and the Beishan Mountains in the north. Our results highlight the effects of dead Cl on 36Cl dating and demonstrate the significant impact of catchment reorganization on groundwater dynamics and its chemistry.

      Цель. Черноморский регион – это один из центров разнообразия рукокрылых в Палеарктике. В связи с этим была определена основная цель работы – установление видового состава хироптерофауны Черноморья и изучение характера размещения рукокрылых в регионе. Цель приобретает особую актуальность, если учесть, что в составе фауны региона в последние годы произошли существенные изменения, а распространение рукокрылых в Черноморском регионе в целом никогда не было объектом специальных исследований. Обсуждение. В статье приводятся точечные картосхемы распростра‐ нения каждого из 35 видов летучих мышей, обитающих в субтропиках Черноморья и прилежащих территория. Кроме того, картосхемы снабжены комментариями по черноморской части ареала каждого вида. Заключение. Приведённые данные могут быть использованы как для фундаментальных исследований, так и для решения практических задач, в первую очередь при организации и реализации природоохранных мероприятий.

      On the edge of sedimentary basins, karst aquifers can be fed by several water sources from both autogenic and allogenic recharge. In some cases, assessing water origins can be hard and cause some difficulties for water resource management. The main goal of this study is to show the implementation of the mobile sources mixing model approach. More precisely, this research develops how a monitoring method using a multi-proxy approach can be used to quantify waters sources contributions from several origins at the outlets of a karst system. The study site is the Ouysse karst system, located in western France. The site offers the opportunity to understand the mixing processes between allogenic and autogenic water recharges. The karst system covers a 650 km2 watershed, and is fed by three different chemical facies: (i) Autogenic water from the direct infiltration on the karstified limestones with high HCO3- values (median: 436 mg.L-1); (ii) Water coming from sinking rivers fed by spring coming from igneous rocks with low mineralization but relatively higher K+ values (median: 4.2 mg.L-1); (iii) Highly mineralized water coming from deep evaporitic layers and feeding another sinking river with very high sulfate concentrations (median: 400 mg.L-1). Sliding window cross-correlation analyses and hydrochemical analyses during a flood event are performed to implement a mobile source mixing model approach. This approach shows significant differences with a simple fixed source mixing model and appears more reliable but requires more time and money to carry out. The results and conclusion of this study will be used for forecasting and managing operational actions for resource management.

      Karst aquifers are complex hydrogeological systems that require numerous in-situ measurements of hydrological and physico- chemical parameters to characterize transfer processes from the recharge area to the karst spring. Numerous graphical, statistical or signal processing methods have been developed for decades to interpret these measurements, but there is no simple and standardized tool that can be used for this purpose, which is necessary for a rigorous comparison of results between case studies. This Technical Note presents XLKarst, which has been developed to provide a simple and easy-to-use tool to process a selection of proven methods that characterize the functioning of karst systems. This tool allows (i) time series analysis based on correlation and spectral analysis and, for flow measurements, the use of other statistics and base flow separation, (ii) calculation of the cumulative distribution function to build a spring flow probability plot, and (iii) analysis of spring flow recession and expression of the results in a karst system classification scheme. These methods are first described by providing the key elements of their use and interpretation in the scientific literature. Then, an application to the Fontaine de Nîmes karst system (southern France) is used to highlight the complementarity of the methods proposed by XLKarst to describe the hydrodynamic behavior of a karst system based on daily data of rainfall and discharge over 22 years.

      This investigation deals with the application of a multi-technique approach combining data from turbidity, major ions, and trace elements to characterize the implications of allogenic recharge in a binary karst system and assess the relative hydrochemical contribution to karst springs captured for drinking use. Hydrodynamic and hydrochemical responses of the outlets to storm events were continuously monitored during four selected flooding events, and water samples were collected at the main sinking stream in the recharge area and discharge points (Cornicabra and Algarrobal springs) for chemical analysis. The obtained hydrogeochemical dataset was analyzed through mean of time-series and statistical analysis and allowed to describe the fate and origin of trace elements. Despite that most of analyzed components present a natural origin, the existence of a Wastewater Treatment Plant in the recharge area was determined to be the main source of P (phosphorus) concentrations measured in the karst springs. Sediment (particulate) transport constitutes the most important factor in the mobilization of Al, Mn, Ni, and Ba in both surface and groundwater, whilst Li, Sr, and P are mainly controlled by solute migration. The hydrochemical signature of allogenic water component was constrained by identifying characteristic correlations between Ba and Ca/Sr ratio in water samples. The combination of specific hydrogeological processes as ion solution and sorption processes onto solids between solutes and particles as well as water mixing processes (allogenic vs diffuse) result more evident in Algarrobal spring, which receives a higher contribution of allogenic component due to a greater feeding catchment.

      Karst water resources represent a primary source of freshwater supply, accounting for nearly 25% of the global population water needs. Karst aquifers have complex recharge characteristics, storage patterns, and flow dynamics. They also face a looming stress of depletion and quality degradation due to natural and anthropogenic pressures. This prompted hydrogeologists to apply innovative numerical approaches to better understand the functioning of karst watersheds and support karst water resources management. The Soil andWater Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a semidistributed hydrological model that has been used to simulate flow and water pollutant transport, among other applications, in basins including karst watersheds. Its source code has also been modified by adding distinctive karst features and subsurface hydrology models to more accurately represent the karst aquifer discharge components. This review summarizes and discusses the findings of 75 SWAT-based studies in watersheds that are at least partially characterized by karst geology, with a primary focus on the hydrological assessment in modified SWAT models. Different karst processes were successfully implemented in SWAT, including the recharge in the epikarst, flows of the conduit and matrix systems, interbasin groundwater flow, and allogenic recharge from sinkholes and sinking streams. Nonetheless, additional improvements to the existing SWAT codes are still needed to better reproduce the heterogeneity and non-linearity of karst flow and storage mechanisms in future research.

      : Climate change and anthropogenic development considerably influence groundwater resource distribution and conditions. Catchment basin groundwater recharge -discharge computation reliability is needed for effective groundwater management policy formulation and implementation and also for resolving environmental challenges in such a watershed. This paper compares groundwater recharge patterns between urbanized and nearly natural small catchment basins of Israel’s Western Mountain Aquifer (WMA). The correlation between precipitation volumes and surface runoff shows that surface runoff volume constitutes 3–4% of the precipitation volume in the Natuf catchment and 1–2% in the Te’enim catchment. These assessments reflect the differences in the land use, outcrop lithology, topography and hydrodynamic properties of the WMA within the model basins. A groundwater recharge assessment based on water balance and water table fluctuation methods was performed for the mountainous karstic Te’enim and Natuf catchment basins for all the available data from 2000 to 2020. The water balance method provided reliable estimates. The groundwater recharge assessment considered land use classification and climate changes during this period. The average multiannual groundwater recharge values for the 2000–2021 period varied from 17.6 _ 106–24.8 _ 106 m3 to 24.5–29.2 _ 106 m3 for the Te’enim and Natuf catchment basins, respectively. For the relatively dry period of the 2013/2014–2017/2018 hydrological years when detailed measurements of the surface runoff were available, the corresponding groundwater recharge volumes were 17.6 _ 106 m3 and 24.5 _ 106 m3. The corresponding local groundwater recharge coefficients constitute 0.46–0.57 for the mostly agricultural Te’enim basin and 0.29–0.32 for the urbanized Natuf basin. A significant difference in the groundwater recharge coefficients between the studied catchments is caused mostly by the differences in land use. It is suggested that applying such a groundwater recharge estimation for small hydrological sub-basins can improve one’s understanding of the groundwater recharge distribution within a major basin, enabling the application of an accurate regional hydrogeological model that may be extrapolated to other similar regions.

      Karst aquifers are a vital groundwater resource globally, but features such as rapid recharge and conduit flow make them highly vulnerable to land-surface contamination. We apply environmental age tracers to the south-central Texas Edwards aquifer, a karst resource in a rapidly urbanizing and drought-prone region, to assess vulnerability to land-surface contamination and risks unique to karst aquifers. We show that vulnerability of Edwards aquifer groundwater follows similar spatial and depth patterns common to porous-media type aquifers, despite complicated karst hydrogeologic features. Shallow and unconfined parts are more vulnerable to land-surface contamination than the deeper and confined parts, although even the oldest groundwater is mixed with some recent recharge. When modeled age-tracer results are coupled with other independent geochemical tracers of water-rock interaction specific to karst settings, they can yield insight into residence time and associated vulnerability

      Better characterization of the water resources of the Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) and World Heritage Site, USA, will inform management decisions regarding a proposed water supply intake from Bright Angel Creek (BAC) and will inform the associated forecasts on water security related to climate change and the impact on spring-dependent species. Characterization of the water supply for GRCA was improved through multiyear hydrograph analyses at five springs discharging from the Redwall-Muav (R) aquifer: Roaring Springs, Emmett Spring, At Last Spring, Tapeats Spring, and Abyss River Spring. Comparison of snowmelt response timing and mean recession coefficients among the five springs show no significant differences, indicating similar timing of snowmelt-related discharge and flow regimes across 50 km of horizontal and 1,000 m of vertical distance through the aquifer system. The mean water volumes discharged during snowmelt and the mean annual discharge are significantly different between Roaring Springs, Emmett Spring, Tapeats Spring, and Abyss River Spring. Linear regression analyses indicate no annual trends in any of the evaluated aquifer characteristics for any spring, except for more stable baseflow between recessions at Tapeats Spring. Water budgets calculated for Roaring Springs are imbalanced, suggesting missing outflow components, a need to refine the recharge region through dye trace studies, and inaccurate precipitation and evapotranspiration data, requiring model improvement. Continued hydrograph comparisons, trend analyses, and water budgets for additional years and springs will be useful for future groundwater modeling and for forecasting impacts on the Raquifer

      Recent hydroclimate studies on the Iberian Peninsula have shown a complex regional pattern in timing and intensity of climate change spanning the Younger Dryas and the Holocene. These changes are due to multifaceted interactions between climate variability that characterizes the Atlantic Ocean region and hydroclimatic processes associated with the Mediterranean climate, thus making it difficult to reconstruct centennial- and millennial-scale variability in rainfall. In this study we present a composite and continuous isotopic record (d13C and d18O) consisting of four stalagmites from Mendukilo cave (MEN composite) in the western Pyrenees covering the Younger Dryas and the entire Holocene. This record reveals millennial-scale shifts in carbon isotopes in response to changes in the hydroclimate in the northern part of Iberia. The MEN oxygen isotopes show little variation on millenial time scales but reveal centennial changes that correlate with North Atlantic events (e.g., the 8.2 kyr BP cooling event). We observe a delay in the onset of humid conditions in the early Holocene and a subsequent trend towards drier and colder conditions between 6.0 and 2.5 kyr BP. This new, high-resolution and replicated speleothem record denotes the complex connection that exists between the North Atlantic and Western Europe during last millennia and the strong regional heterogeneity of the hydroclimate of Iberia during this time.

Рассмотрены перспективы дальнейшего развития инструментального сейсмического мониторинга в Крымско-Черноморском регионе.       Based on a critical review of the literature and study of the authors’ own collections, a survey of cave spiders of the Crimean Mountains has been conducted, resulting in 20 reliable species records in eight families. Nine species have been discovered in the Crimean caves for the first time, of which two are described as new to science. A classification of spiders by ecological groups depending on their cave lifestyle is provided; a troglomorphic spider is found and described from Crimea for the first time. The most likely scenarios of spider colonization into underground habitats of Crimea are discussed. Most species arrived during multiple Pleistocene-Holocene regressions of the Black Sea basin, when zoogeographic corridors on the exposed shelf connected Crimea with the Caucasus and the Balkans. However, four synanthropic species entered Crimean caves in historical times. High relative humidity and temperature are considered key factors that enable caves to serve as refugia for Pleistocene araneofauna. A zoogeographical analysis of cave spiders is carried out. The majority of the spider species considered, totalling 16 species, are widespread, with ranges including cosmopolitan, Holarctic, trans-Palaearctic, West and Central Palaearctic, East European, and East Mediterranean. Three species are endemic to Crimea: Tegenaria taurica, Bisetifer tactus sp. nov., and Troglohyphantes exspectatus sp. nov. Bisetifer gruzin is a Crimean-Caucasian subendemic species

      Karstic aquifers play an important role for drinking and irrigation supply in Morocco. However, in some areas, a deeper understanding is needed in order to improve their sustainable management under global changes. Our study, based on chemical and isotopic investigation of 67 groundwater samples from the karst aquifer in the Rif Mountains, provides crucial information about the principal factors and processes influencing groundwater recharge and residence time. The δ18O and δ2H isotopic values indicate that the recharge is derived from meteoric water at high, intermediate, and low elevations for Lakraa Mountain, North of Lao River, and Haouz and Dersa Mountain aquifers, respectively. All samples show an isotopic signature from Atlantic Ocean except for those from the Lakraa Mountain aquifer, which shows Mediterranean Sea influence. Groundwater age determined by radiocarbon dating using the IAEA model indicates that the ages range from modern to 1460 years. This short residence time is consistent with the detectable tritium values (>2.7 TU) measured in groundwater. These values are similar to those of precipitation at the nearest GNIP stations of Gibraltar and Fez-Saiss, situated around 100 km north and 250 km south of the study area, respectively. This evidence indicates that groundwater in the Rif Mountains contains modern recharge (60 years), testifying to significant renewability and the vulnerability of the hydrological system to climate variability and human activities. The results also indicate the efficiency of isotopic tracing in mountainous springs and would be helpful to decision makers for water in this karstic zone.

      The sustainable use and management of groundwater can benefit from improvements to both qualitative and quantitative groundwater vulnerability methods for a variety of hydrogeologic systems. Vulnerability methods in karst aquifers rely on key factors assigned different weights according to their estimated influence on groundwater resilience to contamination. Because of the duality of infiltration and flow in karst aquifers, the assessment of vulnerability may be best validated by a process-based approach involving a selection of key parameters and their coefficients. In this study, an integrated validated numerical groundwater model of a karst catchment area (Lebanon) is used to evaluate the impact of model parameters on recharge and spring discharge and identify important parameters that control the intrinsic system vulnerability. The model sensitivity is evaluated using an automatic calibration tool for local sensitivity analysis in addition to a variance-based local sensitivity assessment of model output time-series to various model parameters for two consecutive years (2016–2017). The influence of each parameter was normalized to estimate standardized weights for each of the process-based key-controlling parameters. Findings indicate greatest model sensitivity to 1) soil (moisture content), 2) fast infiltration through dolines (simulated using a bypass function), 3) climatic parameters (precipitation, melting temperature, and degree-day coefficient), and 4) aquifer hydraulic properties (conduit, matrix), which have been assigned weights according to their impacts on spring hydrographs and recession. Other parameters play less important roles. Based on the results, this method proposes to reevaluate the weighting coefficients of key vulnerability factors in the conventional methods based on a numerical model for the proper delineation of protection zones and the establishment of water protection guidelines. The conclusions and methods from this study can be upscaled to different karst systems and climatic settings and can assist decision makers toward sustainable groundwater development and protection policies based on scientific evidence.
